It is always a good time of year to drink red wine, but when the cold months hit, hot mulled wine wins. Whoever thought of heating and spicing red wine is a genius.
I remember having my first mug of mulled wine when I was skiing up north in Michigan. I was much younger and more tolerant of the bitter temperatures then and hitting the lodges after a morning of blue runs (yes, blue, skied very slowly) I just wanted to warm up. A friend of mine offered me some steaming red wine and I happily and curiously took it. It was love at first sip.
Fast forward many, many years later and I am married and have my first child. I decide to start a new tradition, an annual Pumpkin Carving Party. It started small at first, but by kid number 3, it turned into a much larger event and had to be moved outside to the courtyard. I know you won’t believe me when I tell you it gets cold here in the desert, but it does (it’s all relative)! And what is the perfect drink to warm you up on a cold desert night? Hot Mulled Wine. And so a newer tradition began, pumpkin carving and hot wine.
This mulled wine recipe is easy (isn’t it all?) You don’t need a pricey wine, but you do need spices. Cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and cardamom to be exact. Mix in a little OJ and some brown sugar (tips and tricks below recipe) and you have the makings for a perfect drink to warm you up from the inside out. I like to use a pot to simmer the wine and spices together, but then I strain it and transfer it to my slow cooker. The slow cooker keeps the mulled wine perfectly warm all night and I never have to worry about it scorching.
If you aren’t one to start bringing out the spices and measuring spoons, don’t fret. You can still enjoy this hot drink with a little help from Amazon. They sell mulling spices. Brilliant, right? Best part is, they’ll be delivered to your house before you get home from your pickups or work!
Right now, it’s cold all over the country, even in the desert. Make this hot mulled wine recipe, drink it up, and when you’re nice and tipsy leave me a comment. I like what you have to say, even after a few!
Mulled Wine Recipe
2 bottles dry red wine
6 oz orange juice
1 cup light brown sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
2 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp ground cloves
12 whole cloves
10 cardamom seeds
In a large pot on medium flame, heat wine until steam is coming off top, 7 minutes. Do not boil. Reduce heat to low. Add orange juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and cardamom, stir. Simmer for 20 minutes. Strain and return to pot on low heat or put in crock pot on warm. At this point, hot wine can be refrigerated for 24 hours. Add 3-4 cinnamon sticks. Serve warm.
Ninja Tips and Tricks: For 2 bottles of wine, it will take 7 minutes for steam to come off the top. For 4 bottles of wine it will take 10 minutes. I like to bring the wine to temperature in a stainless steel pot like this,
And then strain it into a slow cooker like this
